Do you ever find yourself lying in the bed in the middle of the night staring at the ceiling, replaying in your mind a conversation you had at work or a bill you have to pay?
If so, you are not alone! Sleep is important for your body and mind, but there are many things that can get in the way of a good night’s rest.
Let’s take a look at the biggest threats to sleep and how to fight back!
1. Screens Before Bed
Many of us love watching TV, scrolling through our phones, or playing video games before bedtime. But the blue light from screens tricks your brain into thinking it’s still daytime, making it harder to fall asleep. Try turning off screens at least an hour before bed and reading a book instead!
2. Caffeine and Sugar
Do you love soda, coffee, or chocolate? These tasty treats contain caffeine and sugar, which can keep you wide awake at night. If you have trouble sleeping, try to avoid these foods and drinks in the evening.
3. Stress and Worry
Sometimes, our brains just won’t turn off! If you’re stressed about work, family, or anything else, it can be hard to relax. Try writing in a journal, talking to someone, or practicing deep breathing to calm your mind before bed.
4. A Noisy or Uncomfortable Sleep Space
A room that is too noisy, too bright, or too hot can ruin your sleep. Make your bedroom as quiet, dark, and cool as possible. A cozy blanket and comfy pillow can also make a big difference!
5. Inconsistent Sleep Schedule
Staying up late on weekends and waking up early on weekdays can confuse your body’s internal clock. Try to go to bed and wake up at the same time every day—even on weekends. Your body will thank you!
Some issues that threaten sleep may require external support. For example, grief, anxiety, depression, or drug use can threaten sleep.
