Positive drug screening
A positive test is a starting point.
When a member tests positive, Union EAP steps in quickly and confidentially, following a protocol built around your local's drug-free workplace policy and your TPA's process.
Who this is for
One process, three partners.
Screening companies, union leaders and members each have a part. We keep everyone on the same page, without sharing more than the member agrees to.
Report a positive result in a few minutes with your company's intake form. We take it from there.

How protocols work MembersGot a call from us after a test? It's confidential, and our job is to help you get back to work healthy.
What to expectHow it works
From reported result to return to work.
Result reported
The screening partner or TPA submits the positive result and lab report through its secure intake form.
Case opened
A Care Coordinator is assigned to the member and reviews the protocol for their local.
Member outreach
We contact the member, explain what happens next and schedule an assessment.
Assessment & plan
A substance use assessment sets the level of care, and we refer to vetted, evidence-based treatment.
Return to work
Follow-up and return-to-work steps are coordinated with the local and TPA as the protocol requires.
Tailored protocols
One protocol doesn't fit every local.
Every local's drug-free workplace policy is different, and every TPA runs its program its own way. We build a written protocol for each TPA and local so our Care Coordinators, the TPA and union leadership all know exactly what happens and when.
Who reports, and how
Results can come from a TPA, MRO, collection site or the local office.
- Intake form for each screening partner
- Who gets a confirmation that we received it
Outreach timeline
How quickly we reach the member and what happens if we can't.
- First-contact window
- Escalation to the local if the member doesn't respond
Assessment & level of care
The kind of assessment the policy calls for and how treatment is chosen.
- Screening and assessment
- Detox, outpatient or residential referrals
Follow-up & monitoring
What happens after treatment starts.
- Follow-up testing frequency
- Length of any monitoring window
Return to work
Who confirms a member is ready and who is told.
- Return-to-duty testing through the TPA
- Clearance shared with the local or employer
Consent & communication
What is shared, with whom, and only with the member's signed release.
- Status updates the local receives
- Who pays for which tests, written into the policy
Special evaluations required by the Department of Transportation (DOT), performed by a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) for safety-sensitive employees, are not covered by Union EAP.
Building your protocol
We do the legwork with your TPA.
Review your policy
We read your drug-free workplace policy and TPA agreement and flag anything unclear, like who pays for return-to-duty tests.
Map the handoffs
We agree with the local and TPA on who reports results, who we update and how quickly each step happens.
Put it in writing
You get a written protocol for your local, and our Care Coordinators follow it on every case.
